1. You think it makes sense to tell a group of people to be peaceful about a non-peaceful event. You think it makes sense to have a police officer shoot a teenager dead in the street and tell everybody to be peaceful. Where was the peace when the gun was going off?

  2. It disturbed me how some critics would talk about the loss of property — which is really saying white-owned property — but not the loss of life. Do the Right Thing was a litmus test. If in a review, a critic discussed how Sal’s Famous was burned down but didn’t mention anything about Radio Raheem getting killed, it seemed obvious that he or she valued white-owned property more than the life of this young black hoodlum. To me, loss of life outweighs loss of property. You can rebuild a building. I mean, they’re rebuilding New Orleans now but the people that died there are never coming back.

the idea that violence only comes in the form of physical harm is so wrong. violence is in language, it’s in silencing & in erasure. white supremacy is violence. not affording black children their innocence is violence. dehumanization is violence. reducing the anger & sadness that the black…

  7. I know girls who spill I’m sorry’s from their mouths like they pump blood
    to their veins.
    Sometimes, I am one.
I know girls who apologize for asking
to go to the bathroom in class,
    who apologize for everything
because they feel like they are taking
up more than their fair share of space
    on this planet.
Everything starts with an I’m sorry
    and ends with one too,
    constant bookends that we don’t
    even notice anymore.
We delete her apology the way we
delete likes and ums from speech.
I know girls with ten times more apologies
    than misdemeanors
and I wonder how often they hear
    It’s okay.
    You’re more than okay.

of women who laugh too loud
    skin sticky
    nights warm between legs
    forcing halos to form
from cigarette smoke held between red tipped fingers
    breaking cheap heels across

    chescaleigh:

When an innocent black person is murdered, the media goes out of their way to dehumanize them and paint them as a criminal.

When a white celebrity dies, the media erases every racist and/or problematic thing they ever said or did and paints them as a hero.
